In Sickness and in Health

Five little words, that many have said as they stood in front of the alter, promising each other the rest of their lives.

How many times do you think these words have been said, just because they are part of ‘the vows’. Without thinking about what it could really mean, to be by the side of your prayer ‘in sickness and in Health’.

Maybe ones own sickness, maybe the sickness of a spouse, or even the sickness of a child.

It’s never been clearer to me than the last few years, that sticking through ‘in sickness and in health’ isn’t necessarily a given, even after promising it to each other on a wedding day.

Through the last few years, I have heard of and witnessed some heartbreaking break ups because of illnesses. Be it on my Facebook support group or at my job. Illness is a huge stressor on any relationship!

These experiences and stories, have made me even more grateful to have a man like Jeff in my life.

He said something the other day I think that just shows how amazing he is and to me shows me how much he loves me, more than I could even possibly imagine or deserve.

The comment he made was, now that we have been on this journey for over 3 years, have gone through some very low lows and some nice highs (that unfortunately often last shorter than the lows), he understands people who leave.

If he wouldn’t have the amazing support system that we have backing him as well as me, it would seem overwhelming sometime. If he didn’t have an all – powerful God to rely on, it would be easier to leave than to stick with it.

But that’s exactly it, it would be easier, the best things in life tend to come after going through a rough time, wouldn’t you agree?

Even though we wouldn’t have chosen to have to walk this path, it had made us stronger together! It has changed us individually but also as a couple.

We have learned much through watching others (what we would like and not like to incorporate into our relationship). We have learned from going to therapy for our own issues and how they play into our life together. We have learned to communicate better (one of the hardest things for me). We have learned to lean on each other in our down times and build each other back up when it’s our turn to be strong for the other.

Who believes a cancer diagnosis is going to come your way just a few years after you say the famous words ‘in sickness and in health’?

When I sang them on my wedding day (yes, I sang 🙈, even wrote a song for Jeff, because we didn’t say our own vows, but rather simply said ‘I Do’), I couldn’t have imagined what our life would look like. I was singing ‘in sickness and in health’ imagining it coming to fruition when we are both old and gray.

Life had other plans.

I am so grateful that I have you by my side honey!! You are the best life partner a girl could ask for.

Your ability to make me smile and even laugh, when all I want to do is stick my head in the sand and cry, is truly amazing and I would even go as far as calling it a life saver.

I know I don’t always make it easy for you, but I am so thankful you’re sticking it out with me, even when I push you away.

I love you so much!!

Thank you for 7 incredible years of marriage. Loving me so well. Showing me compassion. Teaching me to be stronger. Doing life with me!!

Praying for many, many more years with you. 😘😘

‘I DO’

From the day I met you
I thought today would never come
But finally we’re standing here
Starting my life with you.

I said ‘I do’ with all my heart ‘I do’
You are my gift from God
My blessing from above
I said ‘I do’ In sickness and in health
For richer or for poorer
I’ll stand by you
‘Cause I Love you

I pray that God would help us
To build a house of love
You and me together
With strength from above

I said ‘I do’ with all my heart ‘I do’
You are my gift from God
My blessing from above
I said ‘I do’ In sickness and in health
For richer or for poorer
I’ll stand by you
‘Cause I Love you

As long as we shall live
My heart to you I give
Because I love you

I said ‘I do’ with all my heart ‘I do’
You are my gift from God
My blessing from above
I said ‘I do’ In sickness and in health
For richer or for poorer
I’ll stand by you
